May 1, 2013 Big Wednesday - Wednesdays April 10-May 22, 2013, 7-10 p.m. The annual celebration of surf at Duke's HB restaurant. Free admission, no RSVP necessary.RetroFesitval May 2-4, 2013. RetroFestival plays the songs the defined the Woodstock Generation. The moment Bob Dylan's "went electric" at The Newport Folk Festival in 1965 the music world would never be the same. Through booed by the folk crowd that day, his performance would inspire a series of outdoor rock music festivals in the late 1960's that would help spread and unite the counter culture revolution sweeping across America. The sunset strip riots gave birth to The Monterey Pop Festival. The Beatles couldn't make it but recommended a few new UK acts like The Who and the then unknown Jimi Hendrix who literally ignited his career in front of the biggest teen audiences ever assembled. No longer a thing for nightclubs, rock music was now outdoors, blaring over open fields of communal young music fans in what would become the dawn of the modern concert industry. Friday, May 3, 2013 Fishing Derby for Kids. Location: Chris Carr Park Cost: No Every May, Chris Carr Park transforms its quaint oasis into a booming fish market. The Ol' Fishing Hole Fishing Derby is presented by the City of Huntington Beach Community Services Department, HB Kiwanis, and California Department of Fish & Game. One hundred eighty students with special needs from local school districts (pre K-8) are provided with a day of friends, fishing, and fun! This event is coined as many of the students' favorite day of school. Last year, volunteers helped students bait hooks and pull in a total eighty-three fish (over 150 lbs), Cost: Free. May 4, 2013 Bolsa Chica Wetlands Tour - Free First Saturday Tour of Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. Tours begin every 15 minutes and five areas of interest are included in the presentation: history, birds, endangered species, ecology and restoration. Docents stationed on or near the footbridge, a truly magnificent entrance to the restored Bolsa Chica wetlands, offer exceptional on-site presentations on the first Saturday of each month. May 4, 2013 Junior Lifeguards Tryouts. Also on May 11 and May 18! H.B. City Junior Lifeguard program in existence for 50 years is designed to acquaint students ages 9 – 17 with the aquatic environment, ocean swimming and related hazards. Students are taught about ocean safety, surf awareness, First Aid, CPR, rescue techniques, surfing, body surfing competition, and much more. Stressing discipline and physical fitness, students are grouped by age and ability in an effort to encourage courtesy, respect, sound morals and good sportsmanship. Students attending this 8-week program will also participate in field trips, beach games, and volleyball, while learning about Marine life and its related ecology. Our annual Rocket Launch is full of engaging, hands-on activities highlighted by designing, building, and launching your own rocket made from a 2-liter plastic soda bottle. Beach Bonfire - Free first come, first serve fire rings offer a chance to have an outdoor cooked meal. Bring your own wood. The rings are located on Huntington City Beach south of the HB Pier, at Huntington State Beach (PCH & Beach Blvd. entrance), and Bolsa Chica State Beach (PCH between Warner & Seapoint). Hours: open 6 a.m. - 10 p.m. All beaches charge parking fees (around $15) but there also is some street coin meter parking near City Beach at Beach Blvd. and Pacific Coast Highway.
