(Terri Oba has been with the Aquarium of the Pacific since 2010, volunteering in both Education and Husbandry/Penguins. She has been a Wildlife Technician and volunteer with the Wetlands and Wildlife Care Center in Huntington Beach since 2002. Her fieldwork volunteer experience includes working with everything from cheetahs to African penguins.)

Take an Intimate Look at an Indicator Species--the Magellanic Penguins are threatened South American sentinels offering clues about our planet. Terri’s personal experiences working with these amazing seabirds provides first-hand experience that will excite, inspire and help you gain a newfound respect for our planet!

Did you know that certain communities in an ecosystem can tell us about the health of that ecosystem? In Bolsa Chica, for example, the presence of the Light-footed Ridgeway’s Rail can indicate that the marsh habitat may be improving, and that organismal communities in wetland sediment are healthy enough to sustain the food web.

Similarly, the Magellanic penguins of South America are a fascinating and important species that give us a peek at the health of our oceans.

The Interpetive Center is open to the public free. It sits on the edge of the Bolsa Chica wetlands and is a great starting point for a walk along the wetlands.
