An angel helps a compassionate but despairingly frustrated businessman by showing what life would had been like if he never existed. Popularized by Frank Capra's film production with James Stewart, Donna Reed and Lionel Barrymore, the play begins on Christmas Eve as the prayers of people on Earth for a man named George Bailey are heard by people in Heaven. An apprentice angel in Heaven is told that he must help George Bailey in order to get his wings. One of the higher-up angels, Joseph, begins to tell Clarence the story of George Bailey in order to prepare him for his mission to help him.
