April 2008
Windows Gallery in Huntington Beach
Central Library normally features the works
of local artists, members of the HB Art
League, who purchase the gallery space for
special showings. On rare occasion, the
public is treated to a special exhibit as
part of a traveling show. This month, one
such exhibit is one such event you won't
want to miss.
When
19th century urban planner Ildefons Cerdà
first had the contract to provide the
re-design Barcelona's central city core, the
walls were just being torn down (under the
pressure of demanding citizens), and the
Spanish civil engineer was excited to have
the opportunity to participate in creating a
city that could become a livable, friendly
environment for its residents.
A maverick in his time,
Cerdà came up with ideas and plans that were
visionary. Providing for a drainage system
to handle heavy rains known to flood parts
of the city, he included such details in his
proposal to change the look and feel of this
cultural icon.
Unfortunate for him, a change in government
meant his contract was not chosen, but in a
contest held by the new leaders, his plans
were chosen once again, and the innovative
concepts were put into place, as well as
making a mark for this person credited with
insight. He was described as being ahead of
his time.
Now on display as part of a traveling show
are a body of works surrounding this
recognized designer. If you get a chance to
visit Huntington Beach or live locally, drop
by during Central Library operating hours to
view the exhibit during the month of April
2008. You can find it by entering the main
level admission gate, then turning left. The
Window Gallery is a small space, a dedicated
room for art exhibits inside the library.
Ask for directions when you arrive and
they'll point you toward the exhibit.
Free to see. Location: 7111 Talbert Ave.,
Huntington Beach, CA.
