Huntington Beach Surfing: Longboard Crew Club

back to calendar
Huntington
Beach Longboard Crew
If you share a love of surfing, and specifically longboard surfing, or if
you live in Huntington Beach or nearby and just love the sport of surfing
but have never surfed, you still can join this fun club.
While all folks are welcome to join, the activities that surround monthly
meetings at Mario's Restaurants at 5 Points Plaza Huntington Beach Shopping
Center surround longboard surfing. The club meets each month for dinner and
to discuss issues or events. In addition, several club surfing events are
held annually.
As if he didn't have enough on his plate, club director, Gary Sahagen, also
runs many of the operations at the Huntington Beach International Surfing
Museum. Gary holds down a full time job but has a passion for surfing and
knowledge that many say is tops. When there's a question about surfing and
surfers, museum staff and volunteers usually turn to Gary for answers.
So if surfing sounds like fun and you want to take up the art of
longboarding, just show up at one of the dinner meetings to meet some new
friends and learn more about the local longboard surfing scene. There are
several longboard surfing competitions held in the Southern California
region and the club does an annual paddle out which used to be on January 1,
but was held on Super Bowl Sunday in 2008 to coincide with a marathon.
longboardcrew.org provides photos of the the family of friends who love this
form of surfing that involves using surfboards much longer than today's
shorter, aerodynamic versions (kind of like the old skis that were long and
today's skis that are much shorter).
One more event we should mention that the Longboard Crew does as a club
project each year is the
Blackie's Bicycles to Baja effort in honor of Blackie August. The surfer
was an ambassador to Mexico.
