Huntington Beach, CA

The Huntington Beach Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will host their 5th annual Disaster Preparedness Expo in an effort to bring disaster preparedness education to Huntington Beach communities. The CERT program is endorsed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and trains local volunteers in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. The CERT program is administered by the Huntington Beach FireDepartment, and takes an active role in not only helping the community during large events such as the U.S. Open of Surfing and the 4th of July parade, but also provides year-round public education on disaster preparedness.

At the Disaster Preparedness Expo, community members will have the opportunity to learn about the CERT program itself and have the ability to sign up for the free CERT Basic training offered this Fall. In addition, booths educating the public on hands-only CPR, disaster cooking and local hazards will be available to the public. The Huntington Beach Police Department, Huntington Beach RACES, as well as the American Red Cross, Huntington Beach Hospital, and the Southern California Animal Rescue Team (SCART) will be attendance.
