Raul Anguiano died in 2006 and was considered the last of the great muralists from Mexico of the 20th century. He lived in Coyoacan, Mexico and Huntington Harbour, California the last three decades of his life.
Raul Anguiano is featured at the Anderson Art Gallery in Sunset Beach with an exhibition of works from the 1950ʼs to the 2000ʼs.
Bill Anderson of the Anderson Art Gallery has represented Anguiano since the gallery opened in 1995. Anguiano and Anderson also worked together as fellow artists since 1974.
Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach is also celebrating Anguianoʼs 100th birthday. Anguiano was born in 1915 and died in 2006. Anguiano was best known for his murals along with his portraits and figure drawings and paintings with an emphasis on the Mayan Culture.
In 1949 he was selected as the official artist for the expedition to Bonampak, the jungle that was the home of the Mayans. This trip discovered the Mayan fresco murals. Raul was very affected by this experience with the Mayan people and it shows in much of his art. This shows in murals done in Southern California at the Bowers Museum, the Mexican Consulate in L.A. and East Los Angeles College. Anguiano has had many exhibits in Southern California since the early 70ʼs and many international exhibits in other states and in several European counties as well.
