October 25, 2009   Oktoberfest. German bands play both traditional and rock for dancing and partying. German foods and pretzel snacks are sold, plus a variety of German and assorted beers on tap. Mixed cocktails and liqueurs sold by the shot in vials by "shot girls" wearing dirndl skirts make this event a bit more grown-up than the Sunday Family Day Oktoberfest events. Unlike the more traditional Oktoberfests in Southern California, HB Fest takes on a Mardi Gras flair come Friday and Saturday night.  Cover: $15. October 25, 2009   The Mystery of Blackbird Pond book with author Diane Iverson. Author and illustrator will be at Shipley Nature Center, Huntington Beach’s Own Book on the Drought
Special Opening Sunday, October 25, from 2 - 4 p.m. at Shipley Nature Center. located in Huntington Beach Central Park, on this day to read and to autograph her new book. The book will be available for $12 and may be signed by Diane, inscribed as a gift or for your own collection. The art work is all original and of the birds, butterflies, turtles, coyote and plants in the Nature Center. Blackbird Pond has been drawn down due to the drought, and the animals seek to manage. The book tells us what to do to help with the drought and is appropriate for children and adults. Information is presented in story form and in scientific form for further research. October 25, 2009  Wetlands viewing - Birders, nature lovers and the curious are invited to drop by the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, one of the West Coast's significant flyways for migrating birds. Bring binoculars to enjoy even closer views of these soaring creatures. Location: Pacific Coast Highway between Seapoint and Warner on the east side of the highway. Enjoy 300 acres, plus a 1.5 mile loop trail.  No pets or bikes permitted on the trails. Open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
