August 4, 2011 US Open of Surfing Through Aug. 7, 2011 - Huntington Beach's biggest sporting event of the year is held at City Beach, and includes world class surfing, extreme sports action, and great, free concerts.

The highlight of August 4 events at US Open is a guest appearance by actress/singer Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical) at an annual high school fashion show at 4:30 p.m. Hudgens, a Salinas native, has many film and music credits. She has won numerous awards for her tasteful attire. Her co-judge, Tristan Wilds, is no stranger to Huntington Beach, having filmed on location as Dixon Wilson in 90210. He also played the role of Zacharry Taylor starring opposite Dakota Fanning in the Secret Life of Bees. After the fashion show, The Sounds, a pop-rock band from Sweden with a huge fan base and no doubt, many fans, hits the stage at 6 p.m. for a 45 minute concert you won't want to miss. They drop into HB for the concert and head back to Europe to continue their summer tour schedule. For surfing fans, check out the Indie surf film over at 5th Street near PCH around 7 p.m.

Surf Inductions at Jack's Surfboards - Hole in the Wall Gang, Dick Dale, Gidget and a cast of all star surf legends are being inducted into the Surfing Hall of Fame. Public is invited. Mostly standing room crowds. Time: 10 a.m. Cost: Free. Location: Corner of Pacific Coast Highway and Main, HB

Seussical, musical. Based on the books of Dr. Seuss, the primary plot centers on Horton the elephant's endeavors to protect the people of Who-ville, who live on a tiny speck of dust. Featuring characters and scenarios from many other Seuss books, familar story lines from Butter Side Uppers / Downers of The Butter Battle Book and Gertrude McFuzz, The Cat in the Hat acts as narrator briefly leaping into the action on several occasions to create conflict and keep the story moving. Adventure Playground - Kids ages 6 - 12 can build a fort with lumber, ride a raft on the pond, jump in the mud, navigate a rope bridge, and learn how to play in nature. Explore the Skies above Shipley - at Shipley Cool Summer Nights Orange County Astronomers will help explore nearby planets and star systems light years away! Evening hours will be extended for this program from 8:30 to 9:30 pm. The Center is open Every Thursday Evening during July and August from 4 pm to 8 pm. Programs are free, donations accepted.
