March 17, 2007 Play, Musical - Miss Saigon. Music by Claude-Michel Schönberg & Alain Boublil, with lyrics by Richard Maltby, Jr., premiered at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, in London in 1989, closing after 4264 performances.Opened at the Broadway Theatre in New York in 1991, it enjoyed over 4000 performances there, as well. Miss Saigon is a modern adaptation of Giacomo Puccini's opera, Madame Butterfly, a tragic tale of a doomed romance. An Asian woman abandoned by her Caucasian lover in 1970's Saigon during the Vietnam War, the musical's inspiration was a photograph found by Schönberg in a magazine. The photo showed a Vietnamese mother at Tan Son Nhat Airport sending her daughter to the U.S. to be raised by the father, an ex-GI. Schönberg considered this mother's actions to be the ultimate sacrifice. It is central to the plot of Miss Saigon. Reserved seating tickets: $20; $15 Student, Senior 65+; Free Children 3 & under.
